In Ray Bradbury, Fahrenheit 451, forbids reading and punishes anyone who owns or has books in their home. They are encouraging people to watch more television instead of spending time to read. “Established, 1790, to burn English-influenced books in the colonies,” (Bradbury 34). Books were against the law to have; if a person was caught with one, it would get burned. This novel is a warning to how our society would be in the future, that is why people should set electronics to the side and read a book. Television may be entertaining to watch, but many people are unaware of how dangerous the amount of television you watch a day can be. Researchers from Tohoku University studied 276 children who watched up to four hours of television daily. They found out that those who watched more television experienced greater alterations to their brain structure (www.scpr.org). Many people get brainwashed from watching so much television. Mildred said how the people on television were her family. It is clear that they are more important than her own husband. Television is not bad to watch, but people should limit the amount of time that they spend a day watching it. In an experiment in 1969 by Herbert Krugman, he monitored a person through multiple trials. He found out that in less than a minute of watching television, a person’s brain cells can get damaged (www.appliedneurotic.com). If one minute of watching television destroys a person’s brain cells, imagine what hours of television can do to the brain. Reading may be boring, but no matter how long a person reads they are not harming themselves like they would do by watching too much
