Chapter 1 Dogfighting is a source of entertainment where two dogs are forced to fight often to the death and people make bets on who will win. Sometimes dogfights are held in barns or secret nightclubs. Dog fighting is illegal in the U.S. After the fight, the loser is often put on the streets as a stray (if it’s not already dead). As a result, if you rescue a dog that was in dog fights you can't take it on the street because if it sees another dog it will rip it to shreds. Though it's sad that these dogs can't go out on the road, they still need a home. Since dozens of homicides have occurred at dogfights, they are hazardous events — drug dealers often sell narcotics at dogfights. Dogs that have recently been fought may have multiple puncture wounds, crushing injuries, and fractured bones. Fun fact: Pit bulls are the most common breed of dog to be used in a dogfight.

Unintentional cruelty, or neglect, could mean an animal has been denied the basic necessities of care, including food, water, shelter, or veterinary care. Nineteen pitbull puppies are expected to be okay after they were rescued from a car on Long Island. The puppies were spotted in a car by a police officer overnight while on patrol. They were in two crates without sufficient air, shelter, food, or water. After the police searched the vehicle, they found two loaded guns.
