He may have sailed with Christopher Columbus in 1493, and was serving governor of Hispanola.
He decided to make a journey to the island of Bimini after hearing of a so called “Fountain of Youth.” He landed in Florida in 1513, thinking it was the island of Bimini, and came back to colonize the region in 1521. He was fatally wounded by an arrow from an indian attack on his men and himself. He died soon after from an infection in the wound.

Ponce de Leon’s birth date is disputed; some historians say he was born in 1960 and others say that it was closer to 1974. In september of 1493, Ponce de Leon and over 1200 people joined Christopher Columbus for his second voyage to the new world. Ovando put Ponce de Leon to the task of crushing a rebellion at a small Spanish garrison, which he did very well. Ovando rewarded his “victorious commander” by giving him the role of the frontier governor of the newly conquered province. He also received a large plot of land and indian slaves to labor in his plantation. He married Lenora, and had three kids there. The house they lived in still stands to this day near Salvaleon de Higuey.

Ponce de Leon heard stories about the riches on the island of Puerto Rico, and requested to be allowed to explore it. He got approval, and set off with his family and 50 men in one ship to colonize this nearby island. He did so, and harshly put down the Tainos indians once having settled in. This, combined with the diseases that ravaged that population effectively ended their strength to rebel with. He built a house fortress, and he and his party found some of their precious metal, but they were running low on vital materials.
