Poliomyelitis is a contagious disease that is caused by the Poliovirus, which can be spread through people through contact or the air. Becoming paralyzed is a severe result of the virus as it attacks the spinal cord and the brain. Nearly 75 percent of people that have the poliovirus will not show any symptoms. Other people will have flu-like symptoms such as fever, sore throat, nausea, and fatigue between two days and a week. Another important fact is that only the people that get to the paralysis state is considered to have Polio; the others are just infected with the Poliovirus, though adults can become paralyzed decades after they are infected, called Post-polio syndrome.
