Power is defined as the capacity or ability to direct or influence the behavior of others or the course of events. You can witness power everywhere you look even when you were not necessarily looking for it. Power figures in daily life can be: Your parents, Police officers, the government, teachers, bosses, administrators, etc. (enter author of quote and better explanation) The power these people possess was entrusted in them with hope that it will be used correctly. This is not always the case as seen in life circumstances and even in The Crucible by Arthur Miller. Abby knew she had the power of fear over the girls, Abby was an evil person in the other girl’s eyes, a girl who was capable of wicked things, this can be seen in these lines (I.113-132 insert quote in final draft) she threatens all the girls that if she is given up to the local authorities and priests she will basically murder all of them in cold blood. Abby knows she has power over the girls and uses this power to her own advantage by scaring the girls into protecting her devilish ways and even playing along with all of her deceit to make her seem more credible. She soon begins to accuse many women in the village to be witches and to be doing dealings with the devil. Nobody suspects Abby of lying because of the fact that the other girls were also playing into her tricks and it was such outlandish accusations the girls were making. There were instances of people such as John Proctor trying to disprove Abby but he soon finds that it is too late and Abby has too much power and fear over the town. In the dialogue between Proctor and Mary warren in lines (II.427-436 finish quote in final draft). Mary warren expresses her fear of Abby when proctor asks her to be truthful about her deceit to the court in order to save John’s wife. Mary Warren begins sobbing and saying she cannot go against Abby or she will be accused and sent to death just like all of …show more content…
Many people will get to wrapped up in all the power they possess and forget that they were given the power to do good. Both of the people mentioned were given power and in turn used it in their favor instead of for other like originally planned. (“The essence of power quote” finish quote) when power is given to people you trust, you do not know how they will use their power. All you can do is hope it is for
