Preconception care for mothers is taking care of the mother’s body and overall well-being before she becomes pregnant. This includes habits such as eating healthily, exercising regularly, and staying up to date on immunizations. Many women also get preconception checkups with their doctors for health screenings, tests and additional questions in order to be as prepared as possible for pregnancy. It is important to maintain preconception care because the healthier the mom is, the larger the chances are that she will have a complication-free pregnancy and a healthy baby. Prenatal care is staying on top of the mother’s health when she is pregnant by continuing a healthy lifestyle as well as going to checkups regularly, taking prenatal supplements, getting bloodwork done, and other tests to make sure that the mama and her developing child are doing well. This care is vital because with today’s technology we have resources to see if something isn’t going right and if mothers get consistent prenatal care then they can team up with doctors to hopefully fix any problems that arise before they become permanent. Prenatal visits are generally scheduled about once a month through the first trimester, twice a month during the second trimester, and weekly over the course of the third trimester. One recommendation for mothers is eating a somewhat strict diet, and avoiding foods and drinks like raw foods, too much fish, alcohol or caffeine. Eating more dairy, fruits and vegetables is highly recommended as well. Another suggestion for pregnant women is the promotion of vitamin supplements, especially folic acid. This helps with the development of the baby’s spinal cord and brain. Lastly, healthy pregnancies are supported by the mother’s avoidance of smoking and any drug use to minimize risks of miscarriage and birth
