In an effort to make the nation "dry" and protect families from the effects of alcohol abuse, alcohol manufacturers and dealers were forced to close their doors after the ratification of the 18th Amendment. Prohibition caused a revolution in politics, especially in major cities such as Chicago. A complete change of political methods and political leadership meant a change in conditions that caused many leaders to retire.
