One way to tell whether a cell is a prokaryote or eukaryote is by seeing if it has a nucleus. A prokaryote does not have a nucleus, which a eukaryotic does. Another way is to see if their are membrane bound organelles. Prokaryotes do not have membrane bound organelles, while eukaryotes. Lasty, you can tell by looking at the size and complexity. Prokaryotes are smaller and less complex than eukaryotes.
Scientists believe that single celled eukaryotes are more complex than multi celled eukaryotes because they do so much more in a much smaller space. Multi-cellular organisms such as humans have trillions of cells that perform a specific function. A single celled organism can survive off of only one cell that performs all of the necessary functions
