Being an egoist today is something to look down upon, but at one time it was something to be cherished. He is a young man who is just now finding himself. Ayn rand’s Anthem is about a young man who becomes an individualist in a collectivist society. He discovers electricity, the society rejects the innovation so he runs away into the woods to be found by a young woman who is like him, mindful in a mindless society. Ego in today’s society means being selfish and only caring about oneself. The society that Prometheus once lived in did not have individualism so there was no way for anyone to be an egoist.
If someone is an egoist, they are selfish and only care about self gain. Prometheus did live in a society where no one could be an egoist because everyone is the same. Prometheus is the first person to be an individualist so he is the first one

They do not care if it helps or hurts anyone else in the process. Basically, an egoist does not care for anyone else and that is a bad thing, but in Prometheus’ case, it is a good thing. For Prometheus to be able to think for himself shows that he is already an egoist at such a young age when he realized he is different. “I am. I think. I will(Rand, 94)”, said Prometheus when he found the meaning of I and used it. Only people who want self gain will use the word “I” instead of “we”. Prometheus only wants self gain at this point because the people he tried to help rejected his gift so now he will only want self gain. It is a good thing for Prometheus to be an egoist because he tries to help his society, and later tries to only help himself and Gaea only. He wants to go back to their old society and break his friends away and let them live with him and Gaea to start a new society. “They will follow me and I shall lead them…(Rand, 101)”, wrote Prometheus who wants to help his friends to get out of the old society and join him in the new society they will build
