America is a country that prides itself on its “melting pot” philosophy, that people of all races and nationalities are welcome. Yet despite this cultural integration discrimination is still prevalent. In order to combat this discrimination colleges must be allowed to be politically correct. By allowing the use of political correctness, minorities can take actions against racism and prejudice, instead of being forced to endure it due to the protection of freedom of speech. “Discrimination and safety are serious matters that actually do affect people’s ability to participate in public discussion (Taub).” Unless targets of discrimination are allowed countermeasures, then their ability to interact and converse is infringed upon. On the contrary U.S. News and World Report stated that being “triggered” is a very specific state of evoking a psychological or even physical response to memories of a past trauma or sustained abuse. Hardly anyone likes being reminded of bad memories, and this is especially true for rape victims, subjects of abuse, and even soldiers with PTSD.
