In Latino culture, a quinceañera is both a religious and social event. It is held in celebration of a girl’s fifteenth birthday. Historically this celebration was held to signify that a girl was now a young woman and old enough to be readied for marriage. She would be taught the duties of a good housewife, such as cooking and cleaning. As well as being taught her culture’s beliefs and ideas regarding childrearing (“Quinceañera Celebrations”, n.d.). However, in the modern day the quinceañera is still a celebration of entering womanhood, but instead of being readied for marriage the young woman being celebrated is instead taught about things such as their religion and culture, dating, and responsibility. The quinceañera as a whole consists of
