A series of essays were published and distributed prior to the ratification of the Constitution beginning in 1787. These essays were incredibly vital in the ratification of a document which continues to be the basis for the American government. The image provided is a photograph of a newspaper snippet that announces the upcoming publication of The Federalist, the aforementioned collection of essays. In this snippet, the purpose of the essays is clarified. Specifically, what they are, the intention of the author(s), where they will be published, the form in which they will be published, and it gives us the author’s name: Publius. The Federalist Papers were published in New York in response to the opposition seen about the removal of the Articles of Confederation, a document which had been established following the American Revolution. One that targeted numerous areas that had not been properly addressed under the Articles of Confederation. However, not all were content with this new document and felt that it gave too much power to the government, something they were very much against after rebelling from Great Britain. They also worried about its lack of assured rights to citizens. In order to convince those that were opposed or unsure of the ratification of this document, The Federalist Papers were written. They were written by a coalition consisting of Alexander Hamilton, James Madison, and John Jay under the pseudonym Publius in order to defend the proposed Constitution.
