There is no set schedule of recreation programing, but instead, they try to tailor to each child’s needs, interests and family. Thus, this means the daily routines of recreation therapy will be as individualize as each child participating in the programing. A few examples of the types of programs they run would be to discover what the wants to do and make into a reality. Each discipline offers a more specialized set of skills to which can enhance the program the recreation therapist is running. For example, the recreation therapist help with creating the mold of the child’s hand in the memory making program (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, 2017, our program section) which later on be used as a source of positive memory in bereavement counseling. Canuck Place highly values collaboration between the different staff members which making co-treatments more tangible to accomplish (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, 2017, our purpose section).
A huge part of making the Canuck Place Children’s Hospice successful is their volunteers. In the year 2015-2016, they had over 300 individuals volunteers log a total of 22, 176 hours of service (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, 2017, annual report, p.38-39). Volunteer roles that people can participate are as family, peer, reception, garden, indoor or outdoor maintenance, housekeeping and driver (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, 2017, annual report, p.24-25). They provide age-appropriate outings with vehicles that are accessible to wheelchair users, on-site play and recreation rooms, such as, multisensory room. Another huge part of recreation at Canuck Place is their adventure camps. They have Summer in the City, Teen Camp and Family Camp programs designed to offer adventure activities, such as, “waterparks, zip-lining, visits to farms and bug farms” to children and family attending the program. For Summer in the City is held across the province in the cities of “Okanagan, Victoria, Vancouver, Abbotsford, North Vancouver and Chilliwack”, whereas for Teen Camp and Family Camp are held in Squamish (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, 2017, about us section). They had a grand total of 622 people partake in their across provincial camps for 2015 to 2016 (Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, annual report,
