America's prison and detention system can be seen as an entry in to higher crime. It is understandable that: if you take a group of people subjugate them to harsh cold environments, and provide them with improperly sanitized facilities and expose them to the threat of gang violence and sexual abuse you will have made this person angry with the system instead of rehabilitated him. This happens often when non-violent offenders are turned into hardened criminals by the system. Ideas of rehabilitation has been forgotten. People needs to realize that our system of penance, designed to punish and prevent crimes has failed and in its place is an over crowed machine that creates and rotates criminals in and out of itself. This type of work would be far less expensive than the current system requires. That same study by the Vera Institute shows that the cost per prisoner can be as lowered as much as ten percent of that of incarceration, depending on the amount of administration and supervision necessary(Jacobson). Removing nonviolent offenders from prison can also help with the fast overcrowding, it would also remove the need for further tax investment in expansion and accommodation. It would also reduce the need for the government to pay the for profit prisons that are run like businesses then places of rehabilitation. While helping the incarcerated is always in mind, the truth is money talks and if we can provide thru alternative programs a way to reduce cost and reduce crime it would be more appealing then the private profit prisons that are widely being used …show more content…
With respect to them, this type of strong immediate punishment has proved to be a failure. Many of our prisons are filled to the top with repeat offenders. Also when these harsh sentences are given convicts who serve long sentences have little to look forward to and are more willing to act out in violence and not have restraint, this creates a tough acting, attack or be attacked gangland environment that puts all prison workers at risk.
