“ I see the eight of us with our “Secret Annexe” as if we were a little piece of blue heaven, surrounded by heavy black rain clouds. The round, clearly defined spot where we stand still is safe, but the clouds gather more closely about us and the circle which separates us from the approaching danger closes more and more tightly. Now we are surrounded by danger and darkness that we bump against each other, as we search desperately for a means of escape. We all look down below, where people are fighting each other, we look above where it is quiet and beautiful, and meanwhile we are cut off by the great dark mass, which will not let us go upwards, but which stands before us as an impenetrable wall; it tries to crush us, but cannot do so yet. I can only cry and implore: “Oh, only the black circle could recede and open the way for us!”
Comprehension Question# 6
Anne Frank disliked Mrs. VanDaan for many reasons. Mrs. VanDaan is extremely jealous of the relationship that Anne has with her son, Peter. Mrs. VanDaan critizes Anne for being out spoken. When Anne writes in her diary she complains about her being spoiled and how she flirts with her father. At some point Anne begins to realize that Mrs. VanDaan is easier to talk to then her mummy.
If the story had taken place in another time live would have been totally different for Anne and her family. There is a complete difference in life styles in the mid-1900’s and now. In the 2011 life style we have a whole lot more of technology and if the Frank family were living at this time they probably would have survived without having to go to the concentration camp. They would have been able to change their identies and leave Holland and move to the United States where there is freedom. Life wasn’t easy to live in the mid-1900s they had cars, black and white tv’s and barely any telephones. The technology we have now in the present would have made a drastic change to not only the Frank family but also the other Jewish families trying to escape going to the concentration camp. When you look at life now and lives the people had during the Holocaust I feel very grateful for living a safe and freedom life.
