Leaderships

When the United States was divided, two armies emerged. The Confederates and the Union. The Union was the north and contained Connecticut, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont and Wisconsin. The Confederates were in the north and contained Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, and Virginia. There were two leaders who took charge, Robert E Lee who commanded the south and Ulysses S Grant commanded the north. More than 620,000 people have lost their lives in this war. The war started on April 12, 1861 and ended May 13, 1865. The Union’s plan was to destroy the Confederate’s economy. The tension first started when the Missouri compromise which outlawed slavery.

He fought in the Mexican-American war and graduated from the U.S. Military at West Point. He was the general was Northern Virginia. General Winfield Scott declared that Lee was the best soldier he ever saw in the field. About three years later, he was approved by the secretary of war and transferred to the Second Cavalry as the lieutenant colonel. On April 23, Lee was appointed to be the commander in chief of the naval forces and the military of Virginia. Soon he was full general. When General Johnston was wounded in the Battle of Seven Pines, Lee took command of Northern Virginia’s army and repulsed the Union forces. He soon made a mistake that costed him a major battle. He left his battle plans in an old Confederate base which was discovered by the Union
