Lee fails the invasion of the North! Lee tries to move the war to the North to gain support from the border states and fails. Lee believes the border states are being held against their will because they didn't help the South with the war. Lee invaded the North because he wants to show the North what war looks like. He also wants to gain support from the border states. The Battle of Antietam still is the bloodiest battle in American History. The battle had 23,000 casualties. The Union General McClellan gets an access to Lee’s plans and the chance to ruin Lee’s army. Both armies met in the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. The Battle of Antietam is also called “fog of war”. The Union wins this deadly battle.
One of Lee’s greatest victories was the Battle of Chancellorsville in 1863. At the Battle of Chancellorsville, Lee and his troops fought a defensive battle where Stonewall Jackson dies. He is a general for the South . Another battle that Lee wins is the Battle of Fredericksburg; that battle is a very crucial battle. Once again Lee tries to invade a second time and he meets Union General George Meade in Pennsylvania and it turns out being the worst battle of the war. That battle is called The Battle of Gettysburg.

Lee was born on January 19, 1807 in Virginia. Lee had a very wealthy family that owned a large plantation in Virginia. When he got older, he attended West Point Academy and graduated second in his class in 1829. After school, Lee became an engineer. He married Martha Ann Randolph Custis on June 30, 1831. His wife happened to be the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington. They had seven children and three of the seven children served in the war. Their names are George Washington Custis, William Henry Fitzhugh, and Robert E. Lee Jr. All three serve for the Confederates in the war.
