Student academic achievement will be measured using the State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR) scores. The STAAR shows whether a student has mastered specific content and skills in core subject areas (Texas Education Agency). The STAAR is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) for elementary and secondary students in Texas. In The Technical Digest by the Texas Education, the key issues of testing validity and reliability for the STAAR were addressed and the steps performed to ensure reliability and validity outlined (Texas Education Agency, 2016). Each middle school student in the state of Texas must complete the STAAR near the end of the academic year in the subjects of math, reading, writing, social studies, and science. For the purpose of this study, the scaled score results from the math and reading STAAR will be used to define student achievement.

Data will be collected using the school system information database, Eduphoria. Data will be collected directly from Eduphoria without personal contact with students. Student names will be used only for sorting class designation and test results. A separate database will be created using numerical codes for student names and pairing those codes with classroom assignments and STAAR results. The codes will be randomly assigned and will not contain the student identification number, social security numbers, or any other numerical representation that can be used to identify the
