Sacagawea was a Native American woman from the Shoshone tribe. Her dad was the Shoshone chief, and her name means “Bird Woman.” She was born in Lemhi, Idaho in May of 1788. As a young girl and a Shoshone tribe member, she was taught how to cook, hunt, make weapons, and ride horses. On November,1805 when Sacagawea was twelve, she was captured by an enemy tribe called the Hidatsa Indians, who then adopted her and raised her as their own. A few years later when she was no more than fourteen or fifteen her life changed when a French Canadian trapper, Toussaint Charbonneau, won her in a gambling game and made her his wife.
