“Shells” by Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction story about Michael, who doesn’t have many friends and has a difficult time in his life. In the beginning, Michael has been living with his Aunt Esther. Also the two of them don’t get along very well, also Michael has a hard time fitting in. Soon, Michael gets a hermit crab as a pet and he starts to get happier. After a while he is happy with his life. Then Aunt Esther and Michael start to get along better. In the end, Aunt Esther and Michael have a very good relationship. All of his hermit crabs are happy. The last thing is that there is only thing, Michael is finally happy and that is all that matters. This story shows that Michael has been through a lot in his 14 year old life. In paragraph 21, Michael came to his house everyday to find Aunt Esther on the Phone every day or almost every day. In paragraph 8, Aunt Esther says, “Don’t yell at me!” she kept saying, “I can’t make you happy Michael, and you refuse to be happy!” This proves that Michael doesn’t want to be happy right now and he really is lonely in his life. He wants more happiness, but he can’t get what he really wants anymore.
Another reason Michael struggles with changes in his life is that he cares about others, but doesn’t get that respect back. In paragraph 1, Aunt Esther accused Michael of hating living in the house or condominium that they both live in. In paragraph 30, Aunt Esther says, “For heaven sakes, come out of there hermit crab.” Then she turned the shell upside down and shook it. Then Michael says, “Aunt Esther!” Then she stopped, this proves that Michael cares about the hermit crab. Aunt Esther almost killed him, but Michael stopped her.
