Moving On

“Shells” By Cynthia Rylant is a realistic fiction story about a 13 year old boy who moved in with his aunt after his parents deaths. He had to move in with his Aunt Esther. He barely saw her. In the beginning, they argue a lot. Michael (the main character) explains how much he hates living with her. Towards the middle of the story, his Aunt Esther tries to get closer to him by letting him keep a hermit crab named Sluggo. It started to work. In fact they went to the pet store and got a tank full of hermit crabs. In the end, Michael realizes that his aunt, all this time was trying to to get closer to him. He admits he doesn’t hate living in her house and with her. Throughout the story Aunt Esther and Michael’s relationship changes. In the beginning, Michael and his Aunt Esther’s relationship is poor. Michael and Aunt Esther’s relationship wasn’t strong in the beginning. Michael couldn't move on from his parents deaths that happened 6 months ago. Their relationship was growing. Michael started to realize he needed to move on. Esther realized how much Michael needed her. Like he needed someone to talk to. Michael moved on he realized how hard Esther was trying to get close to him. Yet he still missed his parents he didn’t let their deaths get in the way of Esther’s and his relationship. in the end, Esther and Michael both learned different lessons. Michael learned that you can't live in the past, also you can’t let something that happened a long time ago, that gets in the way of you starting a new relationship. Esther realized what a big responsibility it is to take care of a 13 year old boy. And how much you need to talk to them. They both learned that the one of hardest things to do in life is to move on from something you never, in a million years thought you move on
