In To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee and “Courage” by Edgar Albert Guest both exemplify the theme of having occurred when obstacles occur and Lee uses a comical tone while Guest uses a serious tone. A first claim is using the theme of Lee’s and Guest’s use of courage when obstacles are present. In To Kill a Mockingbird Lee uses the character of Mrs. Dubose to show one having courage, Mrs.Dubose had a morphine addiction and was suffering greatly but she beat her addiction before later dying. Atticus Finch was also very inspired by her courageous and strength to overcome this addition. “‘Mrs.Dubose was a morphine addict…. Said Atticus’ ‘ Did she die free? Asked Jem’ ‘ As the mountain air.”’(Lee 127) In the poem the use of being courageous even when there are obstacles is presented in many ways such as saying courage doesn't just come from victory but also defeat. …show more content…
Harper Lee includes this theme in the book to show that anyone can have courage to get over a problem even if something is holding them back. A second claim is the use of different tones from both texts in To Kill a Mockingbird Lee uses a comical tone, but on the other hand Guest uses a more serious tone in “Courage”. Lee’s use of a comical tone is shown when the character Scout uses profane language at the supper table, and gets yelled at for it by her Uncle Jack. “ But at supper that evening when I asked him to pass the damn ham please, Uncle Jack pointed at
