Simon and Ralph motivate goodness and creativeness in the characters in the book, albeit in their own separate ways. Simon being a beacon of hope, while Ralph does what he can to get home and survive. Simon and Ralph may be similar as you would think, but they have strong tendencies to depart from each other's actions and show that they are contrasting in more than subtle ways. Ralph being the teenage elected leader to govern a group of children who struggle to find the defining lines between savagery and order, even though they are british, and “After all, we're not savages. We're English, and the English are best at everything." (Golding, 42). Ralph does what he does for the good of the group, leaving being nice out of the equation. His
