Throughout history, certain groups of people have been more privileged than others. The social hierarchy in the Chivalric Code is made clear that the strongest most powerful male is the best and is the most rewarded. Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Simon Armitage and “The Wife of Bath’s Tale” by Geoffrey Chaucer from the Canterbury Tales clearly represent the oppression of weaker characters and praise of stronger characters in medieval literature. In both stories, the Chivalric Code is upheld only through the clear separation between the lower and higher classes, revealing the social hierarchy in medieval society.
