There has been discussion over the years, of if the fruit fly, Drosophila, actually sleeps. They actually have many characteristics of sleep including, stages of sleep, how much sleep is required, and the rest-like stage of inactivity. There was an experiment that showed that the fruit flies sleep in numerous stage during the day and night. According to Alphen, Kirszenblat, Kottler, Swinderen, and Yap, the fruit flies take shorter periods of rest bouts during the day and longer ones at night, presumably, they are sleeping (figure 1). Sleep is present in invertebrae, and an extensive analysis in Drosophila has shown that sleep in fruit flies shows most of the fundamental features that characterize sleep in mammals.
