Brave New World
In the novel Brave New World, soma IS is seen as the ultimate way to escape from your problems. It numbs you from your external existence. In many ways, soma IS is not dissimilar from the many drugs of today. I AM am not speaking of recreational drugs, or even pharmaceuticals, but rather the unseen drugs of our everyday lives. The ways in which we intoxicate ourselves with these drugs can take many forms. The internet, video games, and television ARE are all examples of these hidden drugs. Towards the end of the book, Mustapha Mond has a talk with John. He tells him that soma and order must exist in a society so that civilization can function. Almost every family in the United States has one, and it has greatly influenced our society over the past century. Unfortunately though, it has also caused millions of people to sit mindlessly for hours upon hours every day. In fact, it IS is one of the only activities involving almost no active thought that IS is almost universally accepted by all modern social standards. In Brave New World, the world controllers use soma to attempt to not only ease the minds of the citizens, but to control them as well. In our own society, the advertising industry and the news have managed to do the same. Whenever you watch an advertisement or even the news, you ARE are subconsciously being controlled in ways you probably never thought about. Imagine that it IS is Saturday afternoon and you need to go buy groceries. Imagine that you have three different stores to pick from. But, over the many years of your life, you have BEEN been slowly influenced by the advertisements of one of the stores in particular.
