The word Baroque from Portuguese barroco "imperfect pearl.” Much like Romanesque and Gothic - Baroque was a derogatory term to denote its excesses. This period of art occurred around the 1500s and into the 1700s. The Reformation in Western Europe divided Christianity between Catholics and Protestants. Northern countries of Europe became Protestant while the southern countries remained Catholic which led to different styles of art. Catholic art remained dramatic, while Protestant art was replaced with simplicity and depicted personal Christianity. Baroque art was characterized by action, drama, the most dramatic moment caught in time, in sculptures and in paintings that were washed in rich colors, with dark and light shadows.
