The Novel uses many references of Spirit Bear to explain the story. As one of the main symbols, Spirit Bear represents pride, dignity, honor, and at some points, it represents Cole’s anger. Spirit Bear is used to show change in Cole’s personality throughout the novel, such as when Cole learned to trust, tell the truth, and be respectful. There is also a Spirit Bear in real life, which symbolizes many things. The novel’s version of spirit bear shares some similarities and differences to the real life spirit bears.
There are many similarities between how the novel used Spirit Bears, compared to how they are in real life. In the novel, Edwin says that “off the coast of British Columbia, there is a special black bear called the Spirit Bear.” This
