The three studies you explained affect our behavior as Christians. Stereotyping is a struggle for everyone but one of the roots of the problem is our motives. Therefore, altruistic and self-centered motives are the most important studies. If we focus on having altruistic motives when helping others, we will be less likely to stereotype. When we have altruistic motives, we will genuinely help someone and place their needs before ourselves. However, with self-centered motives, we will help someone to further our self-glorification. With altruistic motives, we truly care for the individual and have sympathy for them. The psychologist C. Daniel Batson "believes that altruistic helping results from the helper's identification with the plight of the victim. By putting ourselves in the victim's shoes, so to speak, we are able to empathize with the person's suffering, which prompts as to take action" (Nevid, 2015, p. 459). …show more content…
We should not expect a reward every time we help. We should help others because we love God and to show his love to others. When we help others with a selfless attitude, we put others before ourselves and show Christ's selfless attitude. Jesus was so selfless that He died on the cross for our sins. Therefore, we should "do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit. Rather, in humility value others above yourselves, not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others" (Philippians 2:3-4, New International Version).
