The movie Glory is about the 54th regiment of Massachusetts which was an African American regiment. It was one of the first African American regiments. In the Union army, there were roughly 200,000 blacks. African American support was crucial because it made up 10% of the army. They could also serve as spies. Women, like Harriet Tubman, could be spies because they could flirt with men and get the plans from them. It also helped them secure their rights. African Americans took a step in the direction when they fought in the Civil War. In 1862 Congress passed a law that allowed African Americans to join the Union army. Then when Colonel Shaw demanded supplies he resisted until he made a mess of the warehouse. Another example was when the South proclaimed that any captured member that was African American can be executed or put into slavery. Also, officers or colonels could be punished when captured for leading black soldiers. Another example was African Americans were paid less than whites at the beginning of the war. The gap was that whites were paid $13 and African Americans were paid $10. This was racist because they were paid differently just because of the color of their skin. That then led to protest and in 1864 the pay was changed to the same. Throughout the Civil War, African Americans were continually treated terribly. These are several reasons of how African Americans were treated with discrimination.In the Civil War, African American soldiers had many reasons to fight. One reason is pride. Soldiers fought for their country they are then proud that they are contributing and helping protect their families.
