Richard Nixon was the president of the United States from 1969 to 1974, representing the republican party. He was known for saving the United states from the Vietnam war by using the policy of Vietnamization. This policy removed about half a million U.S troops from fighting in the Vietnam war. He organized OPEC, which was an organization of exporting petroleum from countries. OPEC demanded and expanded the oil industry. Including fossil fuels that uses natural resources like coal or gas. Stagflation was demanding high employment and later it had the effect of Inflation increased and prices and the value of money. Nixon started easing the conflicts between nations. He set up three policies that were called to be Reaganomics. There goals were to reduce taxes, increase defense spending, and cut federal budgets.He proposed the creation of Strategic Defense Initiative, later called Star Wars, which would construct a space-based anti-missile system. President Reagan often used a phrase, “Peace Through Strength”, which meant the U.S will only disarm only if their competitors do as well to disregard any kind of war and it increased defense systems. The Iran Contra Affair was a scandal in the U.S, this is where administrators officials were secretly facilitating the sale of arms to Iran. The Marines of Lebanon was a force the included 800 U.S marines landing in Beirut to oversee the Palestinian withdraw from Lebanon. The Challenger Explosion occurred on January 28, 1986, when a NASA space shuttle exploded after take off and killed 7 astronauts on board. Assassination attempts were made to the President Reagan but failed in Washington D.C, he was just wounded. The rise of the Sunbelt was a rejection of liberalism of the Democratic party and the legacy of the New deal.
