Contemporary decisions by the U.S. Supreme Court have modified the original meaning of the Sixth Amendment. Some ways that they have done this relate to elements such as speedy and public trial, impartial jury, vicinage, confrontation, compulsory process, assistance of counsel, self-representation.
Some cases in which one or more of these elements were modified via the Supreme Court contemporary decisions include, Barker v. Wingo, Sheppard v. Maxwell, Taylor v. Louisiana, Beavers v. Henkel, United States v. Carll, California v. Green, Powell v. Alabama, and Faretta v. California. The Supreme Court has constructed instruments such as the balancing test, which works towards ensuring the accused's right to a speedy trial. In it, there are
