The Surratt house is known for the several of the events that led up to the Lincoln assassination. The Surratt house was one of the stops that John Wilkes Booth made after he assassinated President Abraham Lincoln. Mary Surratt, who used to own the house was the first women in history to be hung in the United States. Some people believed that Mary Surratt was a part of the conspiracy of the Lincoln assassination. The Surratt boarding house is located in Clinton, Maryland. The Surratt house was built in 1852. The Surratt family thought the location was perfect for building their boarding house since many travelers coming from Washington D.C. pass by the area often. Later that night, John Booth went into Ford’s Theater and went to where President Abraham Lincoln was sitting. No one was guarding the president so this was Booth’s opportunity to kill the president. Booth snuck up behind the president and shot him in the head that was right behind the president’s ear. Booth escaped the scene by jumping off of the balcony and he landed on the stage. Booth managed to injure his leg when he jumped on the stage. Booth then went out of the back doors of the theater where someone was holding his horse for him and Booth escaped. Lewis Powell and David Herold failed to kill the Secretary of State William Seward. Lewis Powell went to William Seward’s bedroom and tried to stab Seward repeatedly but Seward did not die, he was just badly injured. William Seward’s slave went outside and screamed “Murder!” alerting other people that were around the area. David Herold was waiting outside for Lewis Powell with their horses and heard the slave scream so David Herold fled and left Lewis Powell behind. David Herold did not want to be caught. Since Herold left Powell behind, Powell was lost and did not know where to go since he did not know the area that well. David Herold eventually caught up with John Booth when leaving Washington D.C. and they both went to the Surrattsville tavern.
