Based on what you know about symbolic interactionism and feminist theory, what do you think proponents of those theories see as the role of the school? What are some ways that a conflict theorist would say that educational institutions perpetuate class differences? 2 in-text citations.
The proponents of that symbolic interactionism and feminist theory see as the role of the school is to help us understand what happens and what occurs in schools. According to these theories, schools should reinforce gender-role socialization. For example girls should be allowed to play competitive sports versus just allowing boys to only engage in those types of sports. “Research guided by the symbolic interactionist perspective suggests’ that teachers’ expectations may influence how much their students learn” Barkan (2013). Teachers should treat boys and girls equally by utilizing strategies to promote interest in math and science towards girls and not just towards boys.
