The Giver Theme and Symbols Connection Writing A few symbols that I have chosen to describe my theme, It's okay to be different, find who you are, and where you belong; are the character Jonas, the place Elsewhere and the light eyes. The theme is It’s okay to be different, find who you are, and where you belong, because Jonas and Gabriel are incommensurable and don’t belong in the community in which they live in, but Jonas does something about that by finding Elsewhere with Gabe described here in the book, “The runner's sliced through the snow and the wind whipped at his face as they sped in a straight line to the final destination, the place that he had always felt was waiting, the Elsewhere that held their future and their past.”(224). …show more content…
Jonas is incongruous and he can “see beyond.” A part in the book says, “He calls it the Capacity to See Beyond.”(79). This explains that Jonas can See Beyond, making him variant, which connects to the theme, because Jonas knows it’s okay to See Beyond or that it’s okay to be different. Another example showing Jonas is deviating is, “He is to be alone, a part, while he is prepared by the current Receiver for the job which is the most honored in our community.”(77).
