The golden candlesticks is symbolic of Parris’ personality because it reflects his vanity. Miller reveals Parris’ personality when Proctor says, “But Parris came, and for twenty week he preach nothin but golden candlesticks until he had them” (65). Miller shows that Parris doesn't live by the Puritan’s modest lifestyle. Instead, he shows that Parris is a man who cares more about wealth and his image, rather than teaching religion. The golden candlesticks represent Parris’ indulgence in his materialistic personality. For these reasons, some people in Salem do not like Parris as their minister. In addition, Parris’ interest in money is the reason why Proctor stop attending church every Sunday.
