The Stolen Generation - Australia In 1910 to 1970, the Stolen Generation was a genocide located in Australia. Any Aboriginal children that were under the age of five were taken from their families, placed in orphanages or adopted into white families. During this time, the Australian government had taken over 100,000 children to become "civilized". The government would not allow an Aboriginal to be raised in that household, they would not allow these children to be with their families, nor speak the language, or respect that religion. A genocide is defined as "any of the following acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, in a national, ethnic, racial or religious group". The government didn't like having an "uncivilized" population, so they did a cleansing and had taken all children with a different ethnicity. They would not allow the mother to come in any contact with her child. They would require the mothers to sign a paper agreeing not to come in any contact with the child. The site quotes, "Children taken from their parents were taught to reject their Indigenous heritage, and forced to adopt white culture. Their names were often changed, and they were forbidden to speak their traditional languages. Some children were adopted by white families, and many were placed in institutions where abuse and neglect were common"(Australia Together). When the government would take the children away from their families, normally white wealthy families would adopt them and raise them as "white and civil" people. If the kids were not adopted into families, they were placed in orphanages and were brutally abused and tortured for being who they are.
