After completing six years of service to the Army I came home feeling a little lost. A part of my life was now over and friends I made during my journey became less involved in my life. There are still A few I associate with from time to time, but it’s not the same. I had never been to a Legion before but decided to check it out, since there’s a post a few miles away from my home. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect when I first walked in the door. I did however get plenty of stares from members who had been there a while. It was later brought to my attention not many young faces are members. This was and still is puzzling to me. They also promote strong national security while continuing their devotion to service members and veterans. There are hundreds of American Legion programs and activities that strengthen our nation one community at a time. Interestingly enough, there is an American Legion baseball program. This amateur athletic program educates our nation’s youth on the importance of sportsmanship, citizenship, and fitness. The Operation Comfort Warriors program was founded to support recovering wounded veterans and their families. The program provides the veterans with “comfort items” as well as support in order to make the hospitals feel more homey. The Legion not only provides many programs but it also raises millions of dollars in donations in the local, state, and national levels in order to help veterans and their families during rough times. The donations also provide college scholarships opportunities for many veteran families. The American Legion cannot succeed on its own. Its success and future depends entirely on constant membership, participation, and volunteerism. These reasons include; “(1) to uphold and defend the Constitution of the United States; (2) to promote peace and good will among the people of the United States and all the nations of the Earth; (3) to preserve the memories and incidents of the 2 World Wars and the other great hostilities fought to uphold democracy; (4) to cement the ties and comradeship born of service; and (5) to consecrate the efforts of its members to mutual helpfulness and service to their country” (The American Legion. 2017). These are values I have fought for and will continue to do so. Even-though I am no longer in the Army, I can still make a difference for my brothers and sisters still
