Over the past couple of weeks, I have been reading Garth Stein’s The Art of Racing in the Rain. I am currently on page 187. The narrator of this novel is a dog, named Enzo, who goes through struggles in his life regarding his family. He tries his best to do help out and make people aware of different things that he can see but nobody else can. Sometimes people just do not notice what he is trying to point out. My question is why Eve never wanted to go to the hospital when she was very sick. Every time she either hurt herself or started to get really ill, she refused to go to the hospital. If she would have gone in when she first started getting sick, the doctors could have possibly caught the brain tumor early enough to cure it. The only reason that she did finally go to the hospital was because she slipped and needed stitches on her head. “They might not even do a biopsy. They might just go in and get it” (Stein 103). They found the tumor when they did a scan of her brain to see if anything happened when she hit her head. The only reason that I can think of for why she would not go to the hospital was because she was afraid. She was afraid that she would not be able to go home. She was afraid that she would have some serious illness that would prevent her from spending time with her family. She was afraid of what the doctors would say to her. And that is exactly what happened. This is one of the main questions that came up in my mind while I have been reading this
