The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein is very touching book told through a dog’s perspective. Enzo is a dog who is owned by Dennis Swift. Denny lives alone with his dog and is a professional racecar driver. He falls in love with a girl named Eve, and then has a baby girl named Zoe. They live happily for the first few years of Zoe’s life, but sadly aren’t expecting what comes next. Eve gets very sick and is dying as Zoe goes to kindergarten. Eve’s parents sue Denny for custody of Zoe because they believe Denny can’t properly take care of and support Zoe. Denny hires a lawyer to try to win custody over and get his daughter back. Denny, later in the book, gets in trouble with the law, but for something he didn’t do. After a nearly three year battle Denny finally wins custody. At the same time as that is happening Eve passes away leaving Zoe with no mother. …show more content…
The most interesting of them all were Denny, Eve, and Enzo. Firstly, Enzo is the narrator of the book and a dog which gives him a very different and unique perspective on everything that goes on during the story. He is very different because he watches the story unfold without saying anything. Enzo got along very well with everyone in his family and had very few problems with them. At the beginning Eve does not trust Enzo and is always worried about him hurting Zoe. As the story goes the trust between Enzo and Eve builds to the point where at the end of the book before Eve dies the only one she wants to be with is Enzo. Enzo also had some very human like characteristics in the way he thought and what he knew. When Denny left the television on one day Enzo watched it and perfectly understood almost all of the things on it. During Denny’s trial for supposedly raping a girl Enzo spoke through a box like Stephen Hawking and saved Denny from going to jail. Enzo was a very important character with some very interesting
