The Birthmark Analysis The Birthmark is a short story centered around the ideas of self-value and personal opinions on beauty. Georgiana is introduced to readers as the most beautiful person many people have ever seen. Hawthorne states that many women are jealous of her beauty and many men are envious that Aylmer got to call her his wife. Later in the story Aylmer becomes obsessed with the birthmark because he thinks that it represents the imperfection that is a mark of the world. He never values Georgiana the way she should be and is too focused on removing an imperfection instead of appreciating the beauty she already possessed. This slightly distorts her beauty. Aylmer also knew that Georgiana had many admirers who would cherish the mark upon her face. But to no avail Aylmer wanted it off of her face because once it was removed she would look truly stunning. At first Aylmer casually brought up the thought of removal to Georgiana who shot it down instantly, she never had a problem with the mark. Aylmer kept mentioning that he wanted to try to remove the mark because he thought he could and he was gifted where science was concerned and thought that made him immortal. Aylmer kept pushing the idea of removing the mark until he became obsessed with the birthmark and anything to do with the removal. This caused him to push his wife away and he didn’t appreciate her and how much she loved him. He only saw her as a science project. He pushed the topic of the birthmark removal until she finally agreed to let him try. She did this to please him so he would finally accept her and appreciate her beauty like everyone else did. He eventually performed the task of removing the mark and that resulted in him killing her since the birthmark was rooted so deeply into her
