In the play, ”The Crucible” by Arthur Miller depicts the witch trails that happened in Salem. As many characters were accused, and as many died, and many that escaped these trail during the play, we are still left confused. Who was the real hero in the play? A hero is a person who, in the opinion of other, has special achievements, abilities, or personal qualities and is regarded as a role model or ideal. Reverend Hale fits these qualities. He sacrificed his pride to protect others, stood up against the court, and was willing to admit his wrong doings. First, reverend Hale sacrificed his pride to protect others. When first coming to Salem, Hale described himself perfect and a man is never wrong. “He feels allied with the best minds of Europe- kings, philosophers, scientists, and ecclesiastics of all churches.”(Act I). But as these witch trials progress, he sees more and more being hanged and accused. Hale couldn’t just stand there and do nothing. Instead, he put himself in front of others and tried to save the accused especially for John Proctor and Elizabeth Proctor who he knows are both innocent. Hale got a position in the court as he was an expert on the devil. As the trails evolve, he sees the judge as being unfair and biased when judging the accused. Hale tries to convince the judge by telling him, “ But it does not follow that everyone accused is part of it.”(Act III). When he sees John Proctor, who he knows is innocent, walk into court he tries to save him. He tells the judge, “ But in all justice sir, a claim so weighty cannot be argued by a farmer.
