Have you ever been on a train when a disabled person has come on and they talk to them self and act different to you and you think it is weird. Well don’t worry, your not the only one who does this. Many people around the world don’t know how to treat them either. People find them difficult to communicate with and hard to understand. Christopher is the main character in the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-time by Mark Haddon. He is a 15 year old boy living with Aspergers. Christopher is extremely Intelligent but people often doubt him because of his condition. After reading this novel I become more aware of the difficulties, disadvantaged people face in their home and in the wider community.

Christopher deals with many problems that disabled people face and these are present in our society today. He lives a complicated life in and out of the home. With his mother abandoning him when he was young because she couldn’t handle him, he has had to deal with the problem himself and learn from the situation. Christopher expresses himself in a simple and straightforward way and cannot understand commonly accepted modes of signaling. 'I find people confusing. This is for two main reasons. The first main reason is that people do a lot of talking without using any words. The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors.' He likes to keep thing simple and stick to the basics. This is present at the start of the book when he is studying the expressions on the faces. He understands the basics yet he does not understand the more complex expressions. Being disable he lives no easy life and nether do people in the real world. It is a struggle for people with disabilities to find a place in this society where everyone is so judgmental.

Christopher is a very strong-willed character always sticking to his goals. One major goal he had was to become more independent like many teenagers in this society. Through the struggles Christopher went through we can see how much trouble it can be to become more independent. From the book we become aware that it is no easy goal and our parents have to let go of us at some point. The main struggle Christopher has, to become independent is the fact that he cant communicate well with other people. 'I find people confusing. This is for two main reasons. The first main reason is that people do a lot of talking without using any words. The second main reason is that people often talk using metaphors’. This tells us that we have to be more willing to change and become more grown-up. By doing this people will start to believe that you can have the ability to stand up on your own. The novel helps us see the concerns of this goal and make us aware of the path we have to face. Many young teenagers can really gain a lot from this novel and learn really important life lessons.

‘People say that you always have to tell the truth. But they do not mean this because you are not allowed to tell old people that they are old and you.
