Today we will be analysing the novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” by Mark Haddon. We will be focussing on how Mark Haddon conveys his perspective on personal challenges in this his novel. Let’s begin… The novel “The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night Time” by Mark Haddon is a journal written in the first person perspective of Christopher. Christopher is a 15 year old child who suffers from Asperger Syndrome or High-Functioning Autism and has many behavioural difficulties because of this. This novel conveys Mark Haddon’s perspective on personal, emotional and mental challenges faced by Christopher and other individuals around him. Three individuals in this novel who face great personal challenges are: Christopher, Christopher’s Mother and Christopher’s Father.

However like any human being Ed Boone has his breaking point and covering up all of his wrong doings can often result in him over reacting due to his short temper. Ed Boone clearly struggles coping with the guilt and stresses from the many lies that he created as seen in the quote “Father was sitting on the sofa watching snooker on the television and drinking whiskey. There were tears coming out his eyes.” stated by Christopher soon after his father yelled at him to stop investigating the murder of Wellington. This quote clearly conveys the father’s sadness and loneliness in his life from all of his misconduct. The bottle of whiskey is a symbol of Ed Boone’s lies and guilt slowly catching up with him and him trying to escape the reality of what is going to happen.
