First Person Narrative In the book The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time, Mark Haddon uses the first-person point of view to tell the story of a 15-year-old Christopher John Francis Boone. What was seemingly only a mystery story about a dog, develops into an unpredictable read that leads young Christopher to stumble upon another unexpected adventure. There are many different types of narratives that author Mark Haddon could have used to tell the story of Christopher. Despite that, Haddon decided to use the first person because Christopher is not like most people. Christopher is known to be on the autistic spectrum, thus, his mind thinks and understands circumstances differently from others. If the story was told from a different perspective it would leave the audience confused as to why he was doing the things he did. The way that Christopher reacts to situations and events is very unique from the way most people react to similar situations. Whereas most people would understand the meaning behind a statement such as, it’s raining cats and dogs out there, Christopher would not. By telling a story in the first-person point of view, the readers get to know the main character better. They get to see things from a new perspective through someone else’s eyes. It allows the audience to get tuned in to Christopher’s feelings and to see what and how he thinks. This narrative provides passage for maximum emotional impact and lets the reader empathize with Christopher as he goes throughout his story. When reading a story told through the first person, you are able to be totally and fully submerged in the storyline because it feels like you are living it with him.
