The Dredd Scott case was a contributing factor to the Civil War, but it was not the direct cause of the war. Abolitionist had many breakthrough advances pushing toward the goal of ending it once and for all. Some key advances in the abolitionist quest for nonviolent means to end slavery were: William Lloyd Garrison organized publications and speaking tours, the infamous slave Nat Turner sparked small rebellions and brought awareness to the lengths the slaves would go in order to maintain freedom, and lastly the Underground Railroad was used as a major effort to help slave’s secretly escape to freedom. The compromise of 1850 was when Henry Clay and Stephen Douglas tried to settle the arising frustrations by stopping the expansion of slavery,
