“The Gilded Six-Bits” is set in Eatonville, Florida, a Negro settlement where Hurston was raised. It is significant in that the location helps to determine the dialect of the characters as well as homogeneity of the surrounding population. It is safe to assume that, like Missie May and Joe, very few of the settlement's inhabitants have traveled much beyond the settlement and its surrounding areas, therefore the introduction of Slemmons, a man who has been to “Memphis, Chicago, Jacksonville, Philadelphia, an so on,” is noteworthy.
