Tent cities are a necessity for the homeless community. There is an abundance of tent cities in major cities across the world, this is due to the large gap between rich and poor. Tent cities which are like a subdivision or community of homeless people living in the same area. Government officials however find these tent cities to be a nuisance and danger to the safety and wellbeing of the local communities. Although there is a disagreement between government and the underprivileged citizen of the world tent cities are a necessity to prove protection, shelter and a basic feel of security for the homeless. In the article “Camping for Their Lives” the author purpose is to “describe and inform how tent cities for the homeless people have emerged throughout the American west”.

The population isn’t made up of any one kind of race, sex or religion. The thing that all the people in tent cities have in common is the need for shelter and protection from the environment. With homeless shelters being full tent cities have been a great occurrences for all types of people needing somewhere to lay their heads at night. The home homeless community gets a bad rap for having criminal backgrounds or being illegal immigrants. 41 percent of the homeless population has been incrassated (jailed) at some point in their lives, this does not help their bad reputation .If tent cities didn’t exist the homeless would have to search for other sleeping arraignments, running the risk of being arrested for trespassing or loitering. Many feels that if the market for more affordable housing was an option they wouldn’t have to live in such places. Not all of the people living in tent cities are jobless or looking for a free hand out. Many in those shanty towns, are always on the risk of being closed down by the government and the resident run the risk of being victimize of crime due to the lack of policing or
