This piece is titled “The Invisible Life of Small Things” and it is by Cristina Toro. It is acrylic on canvas and it was painted in 2011. It hangs on the wall in the Mint Museum, located in Charlotte, North Carolina, on the third floor of the building. It has no crazy or ornate frame around the edges, it hangs on the wall by itself. As you are walking through the gallery admiring all of the different works, this one stands out as soon as you see it. The contrasting colors of all the small little details grab you eye as soon as it comes into view and it’s almost hypnotizing. There are all sorts of small details spreading over the entire canvas. Small dots and tiny animals litter the canvas along with a few larger geometrical shapes and animals. As you walk up to it you start to notice all these small details that your eyes didn’t catch while viewing it from afar, making it feel like you’ve looked at two different paintings. By using the woman in red as the focal point, and having all of the tiny details be much smaller in scale than she is, Cristina really captures the essence of the title. “The Invisible Life of Small Things” is so connect to the piece it can be considered part piece of in itself. Then Cristina really drives the emotions of solitude and loneliness home with the imbalance that she creates with the line through the middle. This line isolates the two halves and makes the woman look like she is falling.
