After the famous quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, took a kneel during the National Anthem at one of his games, protests against the National Anthem became a popular movement nationwide. Due to the extensive police brutality and racial inequality that take place in our country, the protests against the National Anthem should be permitted. Other people might say that these protests are disrespectful to families that have lost people in wars and those in the military, therefore they think that the protests should be banned. However, because of all of the racial inequality going on in America with the mistreatment of minorities, these protests are necessary and must continue to circulate throughout our country. Clint Smith goes on to question, “Who in this world is afforded the privilege of being perceived as fully human?” Without protesting and discussing these issues, we will never be able to notice any change. After all, our flag stands for justice and that is the whole purpose of these protests, to ensure that everyone gets it. Our country is so set on attacking anyone who contradicts the majority’s ideas that it becomes difficult for anyone to speak up for what is right. Without these protests people would not realize that many people are not being treated fairly. Mainstream media is always telling black people to protest peacefully, yet now that they finally found a way to do so people still have a problem with it. Kaepernick’s actions do not mean that he does not respect the country or our flag, but simply that things need to change. We need to pay attention to the important issues and not let media trick us into believing wrong ideas and perceptions. The only thing that Kaepernick and others like him want is fairness and equal treatment for all people. They are trying to raise awareness for Black Lives Matter.
